AI search visibility tools monitor whether a brand appears or is cited in answers from systems such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. Results can vary by prompt, model, account, region and date, so a visibility score is a sampled measurement—not a complete census of what every user sees.

Content label: GEO/AEO evaluation framework. Realaiva did not run paid accounts for every vendor in this update and therefore does not publish invented winner scores.

What to measure

MetricDefinitionLimitation
Mention rateShare of tracked responses naming the brandDepends on prompt sample
Citation rateShare linking or attributing to the siteNot every answer exposes citations
Position/share of voiceRelative brand presence among competitorsOrdering is unstable
Sentiment/attributesHow the brand is describedAutomated labels need review
Platform coverageAI systems and surfaces trackedModels and regions may differ
Referral trafficVisits attributed to AI sourcesAttribution can be incomplete

Same-brand test protocol

  1. Choose one real brand and five competitors.
  2. Create 30 prompts across awareness, comparison, use case, problem and purchase intent.
  3. Freeze wording, language and region before comparing tools.
  4. Run on the same dates and record platform/model labels when available.
  5. Manually check ten responses per platform for mention, citation and factual description.
  6. Compare exports with the raw response evidence.
  7. Repeat weekly for four weeks before interpreting a trend.

This is a shortlist for evaluation, not a performance ranking. Pricing must be checked on the vendor’s official page on the day of purchase.

Coverage gaps to document

  • Country, language and logged-in personalization
  • Mobile versus desktop surfaces
  • Model/version changes
  • Shopping, local, image or voice answers
  • Prompts the vendor generates automatically
  • Whether citations, answer text and timestamps can be exported
  • Sampling frequency and rerun variance

Two free prompts

Prompt 1: “Create a 30-prompt AI-visibility test for my brand across awareness, comparison, use case, problem and purchase intent. Freeze wording and define manual verification.”

Prompt 2: “Audit this visibility report for sampling bias, missing platforms, model/date ambiguity, raw evidence, rerun variance and unsupported optimization claims.”

Prompt-set governance

Treat the prompt set like a measurement instrument. Give every prompt an ID, intent category, language, region and owner. Record additions and removals rather than silently changing the set. Keep raw answers with timestamps and platform labels. When a visibility trend changes, check prompt changes and model rollouts before attributing the movement to content work.

Practical questions before you act

What is GEO?

Generative engine optimization is an informal term for improving the clarity, evidence and accessibility of information that AI answer systems may use. It does not provide control over inclusion or citation.

Is an AI visibility score comparable across vendors?

Not automatically. Vendors may use different prompts, models, regions, reruns and formulas. Compare the underlying sample and raw responses before comparing scores.

How many prompts are enough?

There is no universal number. The set should represent important user intents and be stable enough for trends. Start with a documented sample and expand only to cover a missing decision area.

Does a mention create website traffic?

Not necessarily. Mentions, citations, referral visits and conversions are different metrics. Measure them separately and acknowledge incomplete attribution.

Can a tool guarantee more citations?

No. It can reveal sampled patterns and technical issues. Publication quality, source reputation, platform behavior and changing models affect whether a brand is cited.

Build a manual baseline before purchasing

Run the thirty-prompt set manually on the AI surfaces that matter to the business. Capture answer text, date, account state, visible model label, mentions, citations and competitors in a spreadsheet. Repeat a small subset three times to observe ordinary response variance. This baseline teaches the team which evidence matters and reveals whether a paid monitor solves a real scale problem.

During a trial, import or recreate the same prompts. Compare the tool’s recorded answer with your manual capture, noting differences in region, model, personalization and timing. A dashboard percentage is useful only when the organization can trace it back to representative prompts and inspectable responses.

Change log for visibility work

  • Prompt-set version and owner
  • Platform/model coverage change
  • New or removed competitor
  • Website content or structured-data release
  • Public-relations or product event
  • Vendor methodology or score change

Use the log to avoid claiming that one content edit caused a visibility change when the sample, model or news environment changed at the same time.
