Know where assets are held, who controls the private keys, what conditions can delay a withdrawal, and what happens if the business fails. Never assume that a displayed account balance proves the assets exist or can be recovered.
4. Minimize API permissions
If an exchange connection is used, create a separate API key with only the permissions the task requires. Disable withdrawals where the exchange supports that control, use an IP allowlist when practical, protect the account with strong multifactor authentication, and revoke unused keys. Read-only access is preferable for evaluation.
